EDGE is a basketball "summer school" for girls
going into grades four through ten. Meeting once each week, the curriculum includes
six weeks of class work training in the fundamental aspects of basketball:
Shooting Ball Handling Passing Defense Rebounding Offensive Moves
Individual instruction is emphasized with class sizes limited to approximately fifteen players. Classes are held indoors in a one hour forty-five minute gymnasium classroom environment. Weekly "homework" assignments encourage players to work on skills learned in class and are intended to foster good practice routines and build skills from repetition. Homework is reviewed each week to ensure maximum growth and development.
The program curriculum includes:
Written Practice
Routines Tips on Tryouts
Guest Instructors as Available
EDGE is founded on the same basic principle that is central to many summer basketball camps. That is, that summer is the season when basketball players make their most improvement.
However, EDGE takes a different approach to summer learning than most summer basketball camps. EDGE stresses an extended learning and reinforcement process with short sessions every week rather than compacting these same lessons into a four or five consecutive day session.
Another advantage to EDGE is the small class size, which allows more individual attention during each session.
"What we are trying to accomplish is very similar to most basketball camps," says Jim Link, EDGE's founder. "However, we have changed the design of the traditional summer camp to allow a player to work on her game for six weeks under close supervision and reinforcement, rather than simply exposing her to all a wide variety of skills in a large group setting in a short period of time. Most coaches close their camps by reminding the players that the camp will only make them better players if they apply what they learned when they return home. In the EDGE system, we are providing an alternative to teach those same skills and drills over a six week 'summer school' period in order to maximize the player's commitment to improve herself."
As one camper and her parents wrote, "I would not hesitate to recommend this camp to any girl interested in basketball. The level of intensity, the respect you have for the development of individual players, and the work ethic role model you encourage are first rate ingredients in your program. I don't think I have ever seen anyone work as diligently as you and your coaches, every practice!" - Deb, Steve, and Caitlin Wirt.
