Dublin Youth AthleticsI have been a volunteer for Dublin Youth Athletics since 1983. I started as a parent volunteer umpire and basketball referee and served as Treasurer from 1984 to 1994, when I resigned to become Athletic Director for the organization. Over the years I have coached more teams that my kids did not play on than ones that they did and it's been a blast. As Athletic Director I do behind the scenes duties in order to make the jobs of volunteer commissioners and directors a little easier. Among my responsibilities are purchasing of all uniforms and equipment, sign-ups of more than 4,000 applicants each year, maintaining a database for all participants, contracting for facilities, scheduling of more than 2,500 games and 3,000 practices each year, preparation of tax filings with government entities, bookkeeping, management of payables and receivables, and financial statement preparation. I still volunteer for many functions such as working 100 plus hours at the CABA World Series annually and staffing the office for selling jerseys and pants (note: these fundraisers were originally designed to be sold only at sign-ups, but not everyone can be there). I still have fun subbing as an umpire or referee. Working with the Director of Baseball and other volunteers during the spring and summer to keep fields playable after rainouts has been fun, too. I help with taking in baseball and softball equipment at year-end. I also attend all league meetings and as many clinics as possible to help the coaches, program directors, and league commissioners. The publication of the newsletter is something I have enjoyed doing, especially meeting new volunteers who help get it mailed. This fall I ran a free rules and procedures clinic for third grade girls basketball players. The InPhoNet service for providing information about DYA was my project. So is the DYA web page (activated in November, 1998). The preparation of successful bed tax applications has helped our organization fund over $300,000 of facility improvements at Avery and Cosgray Parks and various Dublin schools, and I was happy to do that. For the most part it has been fun rather than work. The fun part is meeting and working side-by-side with other volunteers who endeavor to make the programs a great opportunity and experience for the kids. There are so many of you out there and I respect you all for what you do for the kids. The work part is dealing with other parents. |
